What styles of martial arts do you teach?
At Goshin, we teach two arts - Okinawan Kempo Karate, and Kodokan Judo. Generally speaking, our karate involves standing work - punching, striking, and kicking techniques, along with the most comprehensive self defense curriculum in the Valley.
Judo emphasizes throws, grappling and mat work similar to wrestling, and has been an Olympic sport since 1964.
One of the main areas of difference between Goshin's program and most Tae kwon do and other karate curriculums is that Goshin's karate programs incorporate elements of judo and grappling mat work into our karate program. Here's why: in the movies and on TV, the good guy kicks the bad guy in the head and the bad guy falls down. In real life, most fights end up on the ground. Although we teach that you should ALWAYS avoid a fight if at all possible, we want you or your child to be prepared if an assailant or bully gets you on the ground.
We also emphasize practical self defense as opposed to sport karate. The word Goshin actually means self defense.
How do I go from one belt to the next?
Each belt rank has specific technique and class hour requirements. You will always know exactly what you need to do to advance. Also, each time you get promoted, you will receive a video which will include all of your rank requirements for the next belt, so you can practice and perfect your technique at home.
How long will it take me to get a black belt?
At Goshin, black belts are neither handed out casually after a year or two, nor are they looked upon as a nearly unattainable goal a decade down the road. Three to four years is a realistic goal.
How long have you been here?
With martial arts schools sprouting (and disappearing) like mushrooms after a spring rain, it's important to know that the studio you choose will be there year after year. Goshin opened in 1991 at this location. We are family owned and operated. (Some of our competitors are national franchises, like McDonald's.) However, we are Internationally Certified and affiliated with several of the most prestigious martial arts organizations in the nation. We will gladly give you details if you are interested - just ask!
What makes Goshin your best choice in martial arts schools?
Superior Instruction for you and your child that will pay off in better training for you and your family. Many instructors and studio owners are "part timers". At Goshin, Roger Boggs is a full time professional, not a part time hobbyist. He reinvests thousands of dollars every year in professional and educational materials.
Quality and quantity of training equipment - When you come to the studio, look around and count the number of bags, focus targets, kicking shields, etc. The quantity of equipment guarantees that you will get plenty of opportunity to practice your techniques without having to stand around waiting for your turn. The many different types of equipment insure that you will have plenty of variety in your training sessions to keep you excited about classes. Also, unlike most studios, we maintain fully padded floors for your safety. Compare all this with most studios which offer far less.
How big are your classes?
Our classes fluctuate in size, depending on the time of year, belt level, etc. However, we maintain a maximum 10 to 1 Student to Instructor Ratio to be sure that each of our students gets the attention needed.
When are your classes?
As a full time professional school, we are able to offer you more classes and class times per week than our competitors. We offer classes six days per week, and we have an extremely flexible schedule is which is sure to meet your needs.
How young do you start?
We offer a Tiny Tigers program for 3-5 years old focusing on developing large motor skills, Balance, Stranger Danger, ability to follow directions, Concentration, etc.
How much do you charge?
Although it is not our goal to be the cheapest school in the area, our prices are competitive with other local studios that offer far less in the way of benefits, scheduling, curriculum, etc. And, we also offer you a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee! We're so sure you'll see for yourself how Goshin Karate & Judo Academy develops: superior concentration for good grades (at school), or performance (on the job); courage and patience to handle life's daily challenges on the playground or on the job; inner strength to do what is right and say "NO" to peer pressure; confidence and self esteem to walk proud and not be a victim; respect for self and others; if you don't see progress within 30 days, we will give you a full refund!
How many classes per week should I attend?
For consistent progress, we suggest that you attend two classes per week, and review what you have learned at home.
Will there be other beginners in my class?
At Goshin, classes are grouped by age and belt rank. This means that you will be in a class with others of similar skill and age.
Will I have to do some kind of eastern religious stuff that goes against my faith?
Absolutely not! At Goshin, we bow to no altars, flags or pictures of masters. We also practice no eastern meditation as a regular part of our curriculum.
